Sharing Wisdom Wednesday: The Quiet Goodness of Sourdough Bread Pudding

At Three Sisters – Wild Meadow Farms, some of our favorite moments happen when yesterday’s loaf finds new life.

Bread pudding has always been a humble hero in the kitchen. Its story begins in 11th-century England, when thrifty cooks refused to let a single crumb go to waste. Stale bread was soaked, sweetened, and baked into what became known as “poor man’s pudding.” Over time, eggs, milk, and butter turned it into the rich, comforting dessert we love today—a dish that travels from modest tables to celebration ones with equal grace.

Here at the farm, we make ours with our own sourdough. That living bread brings something special. The gentle tang softens the sweetness. The open, sturdy crumb soaks up the custard without turning mushy. And the long fermentation that makes our loaves easier to digest carries its quiet benefits into the pudding too—nourishing body as well as spirit.

There’s a particular kind of satisfaction in transforming what might have been leftover into something golden and fragrant that draws everyone to the table. It’s resourcefulness wrapped in comfort. It’s care made visible.

“Flour, water, salt, and time—that’s all you need to create something extraordinary.” - Anonymous baker’s wisdom

We believe the best food does more than fill a plate. It feeds memory, connection, and the everyday magic of making something beautiful from what we already have.

Feed your soul.

Come back next Wednesday for more kitchen wisdom from the three of us.

With love, Three Sisters – Wild Meadow Farms
